Everyone knew the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight would be heavily watched, but no one imagined how much they’d make on ticket sales.
According to a press release from Most Valuable Promotions, the gate was $18.1 million which makes it the biggest gate in combat sports history to take place outside of Las Vegas.
It also earned the nod as the ninth-highest ever in US history and set a record as the highest-grossing combat sports event at AT&T Stadium.
The total figure for revenue was $18,117,072 which is more than double the $9 million gate that Canelo Álvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders in 2021 held previously. Comparatively, the average ticket price for Tyson vs. Paul was about $304, whereas Canelo’s event was about $136, the release says.
Breaking records is nothing new for Paul. He’s been breaking gate records in nearly every event since his boxing debut.
Despite breaking gate records, the release says they provided “4,500 complimentary tickets to regional veterans and active military groups, local students and youth boxing gyms” as part of Paul’s initiative to give back to the community.
They say they sold out of VIP tickets (375 in total) with more than 30 percent of those seats going to Texans.
“Paul vs. Tyson and Taylor vs. Serrano 2 rewrote the record books, solidifying Most Valuable Promotions as a trailblazer in combat sports,” said Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions. “From setting the highest gate outside of Las Vegas in U.S. history for a combat sports event to becoming the most streamed sporting event in U.S. history, this event is a testament to the global impact of Jake Paul, Mike Tyson, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, and the incredible athletes on this card. We’re proud to have partnered with Netflix to deliver an event that brought fans together worldwide and broke many records. The UFC, which I believe to be the greatest combat sports organization of all time, has been in business for 30+ years and they have never put on an event of this magnitude. We established MVP three years ago and are just getting started. This is what it means to push the boundaries of what’s possible in sports entertainment. Congratulations and thank you to our team and our fans.”
The fight may have garnered more attention due to the return of Tyson, who hadn’t boxed in a sanctioned event since 2005, nearly 20 years ago. The spectacle and the pride of saying “I was there” helped build up the excitement of being a ticket holder for the now historic event.
