Amanda Nunes will undoubtedly go down as the greatest women’s mixed martial artist of all time, but her story in the UFC may still have some unfinished chapters.
‘The Lioness’ has been almost flawless over the past decade, losing just once in her last 15 fights—a defeat she later avenged dominantly against Julianna Pena. The Brazilian’s resume is arguably among the greatest in the sport’s history, but she is ready to add more big names to that list.
Since Amanda Nunes retired from competition two years ago, nobody has been able to stamp their authority on the division. The title has had two owners following Nunes’ retirement, but a new challenger has emerged as an interesting opponent for the former champion.
Many believe Kayla Harrison is the best 135er in the world, and she can prove that to the world when she fights for UFC gold on June 7.
Excited about the opportunity to add another highly-touted fighter to her list of victims, Amanda Nunes has hinted at her return.
“I’m still in shape, I’m still training,” Nunes said. “This is what I’m born to do, I don’t know how to do anything different than that.”
“I’m better now than before, though.”

Nunes continued.
“I want my belt back. It doesn’t matter [who I fight]. I’m going to be ready, [whoever’s] ready to face me, I’m definitely going to be ready for.”
“I’m 36 and [I’ve got] no injury, no surgery. So, let’s go… I feel like the division needs me right now… Let’s make the 135 [division] great again.”
If Amanda Nunes does make her return to the octagon, her opponent will be decided in the co-main event at UFC 216.
Champion Julianna Pena is putting her gold up against Kayla Harrison, with the winner getting the honor to welcome Nunes back to the sport.
